I call myself a food writer. And also a mother, author, feminist, food columnist; a sporadic but enthusiastic food blogger; a world traveller limited only by funds, time, and a large hairy dog; a mad keen cook and eater; a chocolate aficionado, owl watcher, and serious outdoor activity enthusiast. I live along the beautiful north shore of Lake Ontario.
I was born on an overseas business trip.
By the time I was school-aged I had lived in three countries on two continents. My roots are in the rugged north of England, in Yorkshire, where I spent my formative years before moving to Canada. Later still I moved to Australia – then back to Canada – then back to Australia, etc., (three times so far) before finally calling Ontario home.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved being in the kitchen. One of my earliest memories is of being with my grandfather in his ancient Yorkshire kitchen, rolling out the pastry for jam tarts. (Hence the blog name.) I was three years old.
There, in my grandfather’s kitchen, I came to know love. I’ve had an enduring love affair with food and history ever since.
I favour tasty, simple, healthy cooking with a focus on fresh, local, seasonal, and organic ingredients where possible. I’m consciously trying to avoid industrially produced and factory-farmed food as well as the use of plastic in my kitchen. I like short, sweet recipes for delicious, simple, healthy, real food – with occasional lapses into chocolate lunacy and the odd cocktail.
