french kiss with a twist

the Saturday evening post

This one’s going to be a real quickie… it’s drinkies time.

Tonight, being Saturday, we’re starting with a cocktail – the French kiss with a twist.

If you don’t know how to make a lemon twist – get in line – there’s a plethora of instructions and videos online. If you’re a serious cocktail drinker, you’ll probably have the kitchen tool designed for the purpose – the lemon zester – which apparently makes perfect lemon twists every single time. I don’t have one and I don’t have any plans to get one either. But if you’ve got excess space in your kitchen and an excessive fondness for rarely used kitchen gadgets OR you drink an awful lot of martinis – then a lemon zester is for you.

For the record, this is what a lemon zester looks like. As far as I can tell it has no other purpose in life but to make lemon twists.

Don’t try to make lemon twists with a knife. If you do, you’ll likely need more than a cocktail to recuperate. It’s a sure-fire way to end up with a nasty cut or a trip to the emergency room for stitches. A potato peeler will do the job. You won’t have a lemon twist so much a thinly shaved piece of peel – but that will work quite nicely.

Here’s the recipe… the perfect drink to serve with a platter of smoked salmon.

French kiss with a twist

1 1/2 ounces of Grey Goose Vodka (it’s French!)

1/2 ounce of Sambuca

ice and a twist of lemon

Rub a martini glass with the twist of lemon. Fill with ice, pour the alcohol over.

À votre santé!

Mmm, delicious. I use my zester all the time, cucumbers too as well as for all kinds of citrus which I like to candy for garnishes.

Brilliant idea – thank you! I should not have been so hard on the poor old lemon zester – I do hereby publicly repent!
Love candied peel. I’ll add a zester to my shopping list and do a follow-up post down the track.

By coincidence, I had a French Kiss last night Judy, and yes, I mean the Martini version. After writing that post, I did break down and acquire a lemon zester. It makes for pretty drinks.
      Cheers…

I'd love to hear from you...
